In partnership with Cal Expo’s The Farm, The Forest Foundation will be conducting field trips in the California Forest Center beginning in September and we are looking for tour leaders to assist. The California Forest Center is a one-acre, urban forest located at Cal Expo in Sacramento managed by The Forest Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)3. Our partnership with Cal Expo gives us a unique opportunity to provide a program designed to help elementary school kids understand the multiple benefits of healthy California forests. How they provide clean air, water, shade, habitat and forest products. Please visit www.calforestfoundation.org to learn more about The Forest Foundation.

The Forest Foundation is seeking volunteers who are honest, trustworthy, reliable, friendly, and enjoy working with elementary school age children. A background in natural resources or education is desired, but not required. Using interactive lessons and hands on activities, tour leaders will showcase native species and forest ecology, focus on solutions to forest health problems such as drought, disease, and catastrophic wildfires, and explains how healthy forests provides renewable, recyclable wood products, recreation, wildlife habitat, clean water and clean air.

Tour Leaders will work with one another and Forest Foundation staff with day-to-day operations of the California Forest Center at Cal Expo before and during the scheduled tour times. The tours run for 6 weeks, Mondays - Thursday’s. We conduct 1-2 tours a day, each about 75 minutes long. Tour times are 9:30am and/or 11:30am. Volunteers will be given training and orientation prior to starting the school tours. We do not ask volunteers to work every tour, but would like a commitment of one to two tours/days a week.

If this is something that interest you, please feel free to email or call us and we can send you a more detailed description of what to volunteer shifts look like. This is fun and enjoyable opportunity for retired educators or natural resource professions or anyone who enjoys educating school age children.

Thank you for your consideration.

Mission Statement

To foster public understanding of forest ecosystems in California by providing balaced, science-based information on environmental, economic, and societal uses of forest resources for present and succeeding generations.

Description

The Forest Foundation is a non-profit organization that strives to foster an understanding of the importance of forests and how they affect California’s environmental and economic health. California's forests have long been valued for their natural resources, wildlife, and recreation. About 75% of California's drinking water originates in forested watersheds, we rely on wood products from lumber to medicines, on a daily basis, and many industries rely on the forest for the recreational activities it naturally provides. Yet a majority of Californians have become disconnected from this valuable land. The Forest Foundation educates the present and next generation about forest ecosystems in California by providing free balanced, science-based programs and curriculum to K - 12 grade students throughout the state. We help bring the forests to the classroom. We have reached tens of thousands of students with our fee education programs and curriculum materials for K-12 classrooms and sponsor numerous programs about caring for forests. By sharing knowledge, we aim to protect water and air quality and ensure diverse wildlife while sustaining forests.
