Make a large impact with a small but developing organization! Local Circles opened in 2016 to provide Detroit teens a job opportunity in the field of Youth-Led Research.

Mission
Local Circles facilitates youth-led research in which young people pose their own questions and conduct research to inquire upon social issues that are meaningful to them.

Position
The Board will support the work of Local Circles and provide mission-based leadership and strategic governance. While day-to-day operations are led by Local Circles’ Executive Director (ED), the Board-ED relationship is a partnership, and the appropriate involvement of the Board is both critical and expected. Specific Board Member responsibilities include:

Leadership, Governance and Oversight
  • Acting as an ambassador for the organization,
  • Serving as a trusted advisor to the ED as s/he develops and implements Local Circles’ strategic plan,
  • Serving on committees or task forces and taking on special assignments, and
  • Ensuring Local Circles’ commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the community Local Circles serves.
Fundraising

Local Circles Board Members will consider Local Circles a philanthropic priority and make annual gifts that reflect that priority. So that Local Circles can credibly solicit contributions from foundations, organizations, and individuals, Local Circles expects to have 100 percent to Board Members make an annual contribution that is commensurate with their capacity.

Board Terms and Participation

Local Circles’ board members will serve a two-year term to be eligible for re-appointment for two additional terms. Terms start in January or July. Board meetings will be held quarterly, and committee meeting will be held in coordination with full board meetings. At this time board and committee meetings are being held online, with the possibility of meeting in-person later in the year.

Skills

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about Local Circles’ mission and who has a track record of board leadership. Ideal candidates will have at least one of the following skills:

  • Legal
  • Public Relations
  • Digital strategy and social media
  • Professional fundraising
  • Networking, and a Detroit-based network with whom you are willing to share our work

Service on Local Circles’ Board of Directors is without remuneration.

Description

Local Circles offers young Detroiters an employment opportunity that allows them to meet other youth from across the city, use their own ideas and interests to gain new skills, and learn how to be ready for college and marketable for a future job. Local Circles is a job in Youth-Led Research. By doing social science research, participants in Local Circles will learn how to observe their community and ask questions about it. They will be exposed to research, how to do it, and why it is beneficial for youth and their community.
