The Society for Conservation Biology (SCB) is seeking a highly motivated, creative, organized for the Fall 2018 semester. The internship is offered on a part-time basis for a 3-month duration between September through November 2018, with a flexible start date. Come join a growing team; we’re recruiting an intern interested in learning how nonprofits succeed, cultivating new funding partnerships, and planning the 2019 International Congress for Conservation Biology in Malaysia.

This internship is ideal for someone seeking a career in a conservation or environmental nonprofit, special events, marketing, fundraising, and/or communications. Selected intern will play a vital role in helping drive SCB’s various global fundraising campaigns and gain hands-on exposure to global special event management. As an SCB Nonprofit Development/Special Event Intern, you will have the opportunity to interact with SCB’s international membership, Regional Sections, topical Working Groups, grass-roots Chapters, develop communications skills, analyze data, learn administrative and organizational skills, and understand the workings of an international nonprofit.

Candidates must be self-motivated, a team player, results-oriented, and dedicated to global conservation efforts. The Development/Special Events Intern will report directly to the Director of Conferences and Events and work closely with Director of Philanthropy to secure new grants and revenue streams.

This unpaid internship requires a commitment from September through November 2018, 20 hours a week with some flexibility. The intern’s time will be spent at SCB’s Executive Office located at 1133 15 th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20005, 2 blocks from the McPhersons Metro Station, and accessible by public bus transportation from most Washington, DC neighborhoods.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct research and analysis on prospective and existing individual, foundation and corporate partners
  • Draft and/or edit business development materials such as correspondence, reports, proposals and donor appeals
  • Assist with strategies for donor cultivation and solicitation
  • Assist with iMIS donor and grant database management, SCB’s donor database
  • Assist in planning and coordinating for multiple events, including Annual SCB Business Meeting, 2019, 2021 and 2023 International Congress for Conservation Biology (ICCB), and SCB Board of Governors meeting.
  • Research and provide recommendations in vendor selection for Congresses
  • Research and identify possible exhibitors and donors for events and create and update databases to reflect research
  • Participate in special event planning meetings and calls.
  • Attend department and staff meetings
  • Maintain and monitor ICCB social media accounts
  • Assist with special projects as needed

Ideal Candidate Requirements:

Applicants must be:

  • A current college student or recent graduate (within the past year)
  • Willing to dedicate 20 hours per week to the unpaid internship
  • Able to secure housing within a commutable distance to the Washington DC office

Applicants must have:

  • Responsible, flexible, hard-working, ethical and committed to SCB’s mission
  • Possess a high level of organizational skills and be detail-oriented
  • Possess solid oral and written communications skills
  • Skilled at a variety of computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Desire to learn more about event management, fundraising and philanthropy
  • Experience with databases is a plus, but not required
  • Current or recently graduated college or graduate student

Compensation:

  • This is an unpaid intern position
  • Public Transit Stipend

Duration of Internship:

  • September through November 2018
