The McHenry County Historical Society in Union, Illinois, seeks a qualified and motivated Research Center Volunteer to begin working on a comprehensive inventory and digitization of our library and archive materials. The materials held in the Research Center consist of paper-based documents including but not limited to books, photographs, maps, newspapers, periodicals, select business and organizational records, genealogy files, and media including video, slide, record, and other audio/visual formats. This is an excellent opportunity to work with local history!

Working with the Exhibits Curator and Research Librarian, the Research Center Volunteer will be inventorying, handling, and moving archive materials, cataloging and supplementing the information in the collections database (PastPerfect), ensuring proper archival storage, and photographing them. A background in library sciences or an interest in learning research library skills is preferred but not required. Volunteers will be trained on how to use PastPerfect. Flexible volunteer shifts. Minimum 4 hours a week. Any days, Monday - Friday 9 am - 4 pm

General Requirements

  • Must be able to lift 10-20 lbs.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Descriptive writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.

Established in 1963, our members, staff, and volunteers have a 60-year-plus record rich in preservation, education, and entertainment contributions to McHenry County.

We create learning experiences and events. We focus on local culture, organization, and family history. We collect and care for notable artifacts. We participate in the activities of like-minded organizations throughout McHenry County.

Besides operating the museum, the Society plaques historic sites and structures, holds adult programs and arranges various school and adult group tours.
