Typical activities as a board member include:
- Interpret the organization’s work and values to the community, represent the organizations and act as a spokesperson when authorized by the board so to do;
- Attend all meetings of the full board;
- Chair or actively serve on at least one standing committee or task force;
- Actively participate through one or more of the following:
- Attendance at events or programs involving SAFE;
- Arrangement for SAFE presentations to civic clubs, religious groups, business associates or groups or friends;
- Contact with no less than five individuals, foundations, businesses or civic groups to request financial support of SAFE;
- Invitation and accompaniment of a friend or associate to a meeting of the board or of the executive committee;
- Contribute financially to the organization according to one’s ability;
- Act in the best interest of SAFE and excuse myself from discussion and votes where I have a conflict of interest;
- Stay informed by receiving and seeking information as needed in order to responsibly participate in decisions regarding issues, policies and other board matters;
- Recommend potential nominees to the board who can make significant contributions to the work of SAFE;
- Maintain good faith with staff, volunteers, board members and all other associated with SAFE;
- Participate in board development, strategic planning and evaluation studies.

Description
Substance Abuse Free Environment Inc. (SAFE) has been serving Chesterfield County, Virginia, a suburban/rural county of 319,000 residents south of the City of Richmond, since 1999. SAFE utilizes awareness and education, community partnerships, youth leadership and advocacy to address substance abuse issues. The coalition works to create community-level change in behaviors and attitudes relating to substance abuse.
SAFE develops its initiatives based on community issues identified through surveys of youths and parents, statistical data such as juvenile alcohol and drug-related arrests, and community input.
