Volunteer as a Spanish Translator!

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Eden Housing, Inc.

Are you a certified translator or fluent in both Spanish and English? Are you bilingual and interested in helping non-native English speakers communicate with their property/services staff? We house many non-English speaking families who struggle to communicate with their English-speaking staff members at Community Meetings and would love for their voices to be heard during their Community Meetings. We are also hoping to add more services like a Technology Class and other programming at this site. Without a translator, programming can be a challenge. Are you interested in giving back to share your skills with low-income families? Would you like to gain experience and practice hours translating? If so, our residents would love to have you!

Duties:

Be present at all monthly Community Meetings and/or ongoing programs. Translate the content of the meetings/programming to residents in Spanish, and translate residents' input into English. Greet attendees and make them feel welcome. Provide encouragement and relay any concerns to staff. Help residents build confidence as they participate more easily in their community.

Skills needed:

  • Spanish translator certification preferred but not required
  • Friendly and patient attitude
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and a positive personality and demeanor
  • Spanish speaking/bilingual

Benefit:

Volunteers will gain teaching experience with low-income and under-served populations, as well as the opportunity to develop and hone their translation skills. Build relationships with residents and get to know them. Give back to the community by sharing your skill and expertise with others.

Time commitment:

Volunteer must commit to being present at ongoing scheduled programs.

About Eden Housing, Inc.

Location:

22645 Grand Street, Hayward, CA 94541, US

Mission Statement

Eden Housing creates and sustains high-quality affordable housing communities that advance equity and opportunity for all.

Description

Eden Housing, Inc. is a California non-profit corporation founded in 1968 by six community activists who were concerned about the lack of non-discriminatory, affordable housing in Northern California. These volunteers began by rehabilitating older homes in Hayward for first time homebuyer families. In the mid-1980s, Eden Housing incorporated an affiliated property management company, Eden Housing Management, Inc. (EHMI), which currently provides quality onsite management and maintenance for more than 9,000 affordable homes throughout California. In the mid-1990's, Eden Housing expanded its scope to include the provision of free onsite support services and programs for its residents. Our services include technology programming; "green" resident education; youth academic, enrichment and recreation programs; programs for seniors and persons with disabilities; financial literacy; job/career preparation; and health and wellness programs for all ages.

Today, Eden has a portfolio of 9,000 units at 145 properties across 15 counties in California. Eden develops new construction and acquires and rehabilitates existing properties to preserve them. During the past 53 years, over 65,000 people have come home to an Eden Housing community. At Eden Housing, we have more than 20,000 households on our waiting list and a portfolio-wide vacancy rate of 1%, demonstrating a huge demand for our work.
