Mentor 12-year-old refugee boy from Nepal in Lowell

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: Bethany Christian Services

A male volunteer, couple, or family is needed to mentor a 12-year-old boy from Nepal who is in Bethany's Refugee Foster Care program. He was placed in a foster home in Lowell upon his arrival in the U.S. in November of 2017. The youth has basic English skills and continues to improve quickly. His case manager shared that, "He is very active and has a lot of energy. He is eager to learn, and loves to play games and have fun. He likes to go to the Nepali restaurant in Grand Rapids, and is very social and friendly." The youth has an older brother (15) who has been placed in the same foster home. It is likely that this brother would occasionally accompany the youth on mentoring outings.

Background: This youth's mother abandoned their family, his father was an alcoholic and refused to resettle with his children as he did not wish to care for them. He was born and raised in the refugee camp until he resettled in November last year. He experienced traumas that come with living in a refugee camp for so long, and his father would be gone for days at a time leaving him and his brothers to care for themselves at a young age.
