In just 30 minutes per week volunteers can help local first-graders from under-resourced communities learn how to read.

Innovations for Learning uses technology to connect the classroom and the community to reduce inequality in education. Through TutorMate, our online volunteer program, students from under-resourced schools are paired with local corporate and community volunteers for weekly, online reading sessions. These partnerships foster student reading growth, comprehension, and communication skills.

TutorMate partners with 27 major school districts across the US. Tutors often live within one hour of the tutoring location to accommodate the 1-2 school visits during the school year.

All community tutors will be asked to help us support and grow the TutorMate program through an online fundraising drive in the spring.

Mission Statement

Innovations for Learning is a nonprofit organization committed to improving literacy outcomes of young students in under-resourced schools by connecting the classroom to the community.

Description

We are committed to improving literacy outcomes of primary grade students in under-resourced schools. Our flagship program, TutorMate, offers a unique opportunity for local volunteers to help students practice reading through weekly, online reading sessions. The consistent connection with a nurturing and friendly tutor not only helps students reach grade-level literacy, but also fosters self-esteem, confidence, and a joy for reading.

TutorMate is changing the literacy landscape in 27 major metropolitan school districts in the United States and, as of 2018, in London, UK and Toronto, Canada.
