Position Objective:

To assist the Garden Coordinator in engaging students in the garden with hands- on activities, and further their understanding of natural sciences and their connection to their environment. The Learning Garden Docent will assist with programs as well as day-to-day garden activities.

Responsibilities and Duties:

• Setting up for and cleaning up after lessons- includes prepping soil, tools, water, etc. as well as making copies, gathering materials, arranging clipboards, or other supply preparation.
• Leading a group of 10-12 kids at a time doing a specific garden activity (you will receive lesson plans prior to each class.
• Engaging with students in the garden and nurturing their interest in plant growth, insects, soil, etc.
• Maintaining the garden by weeding, watering, or whatever seasonal upkeep needed

Qualifications:

• No experience gardening necessary
• Some experience working with kids desired
• Must pass a background check and child safety test with the school
• Timeliness
• Ability to work individually and with others
• An understanding of school expectations
• Must be ready to make learning fun!

Commitment expected:

Please expect to spend about 2-8 hours per month helping with one of these programs during these times-

Tuesdays 9am-2:30pm September-December

Training: Volunteer orientation TBA

Age Requirement: 16+

Dress Code: School appropriate attire please.

Other information: Wedgwood Elementary is in North Seattle and near a bus route. Meals not provided, but the Docent will get to take home veggies from the garden when available. Additional hours in the evenings for events may be offered but are not required. Foxberry Education works with the PTA of Wedgwood Elementary to bring garden programming to the students during class time.
