Girls Inc. of Metro Denver

Girls Inc. of Metro Denver is looking for fall program assistant volunteers! Program assistants will assist Girls Inc. instructors who facilitate curriculum to girls in Elementary School Programs (1 st-5 th Grade) or Middle School Programs (grades 6 th-8 th Grade).

Principle responsibilities include:

  • Assist instructors with the delivery of class curriculum and interactive activities.
  • Provide creative supervisory support during free-time periods.
  • Distribute snacks, set-up and clean classrooms and perform administrative tasks as needed.
  • Lead story time, bathroom breaks, warm up activities and group games.
  • Engage with girls on the playground (playing jump rope, initiating various sporting activities, running, lifting and reaching for outdoor equipment, kneeling, sitting on the ground, playing outdoors and on field trips, etc.)
  • Manager behavior and mediate difficult conversations.
  • Help cultivate a safe environment for girls by addressing relational aggression and inspiring a culture of sisterhood.
  • Maintain a positive environment for all girls through discipline, classroom management and inclusiveness.
  • Maintain a constructive environment for all girls through positive reinforcement, discipline, classroom management and inclusiveness.
  • May be asked to be a substitute volunteer in other classes as needed.
  • Work as a team with Girls Inc. instructors and other volunteers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Must be 14 years of age or older for elementary and over 18 for middle school programs.
  • Proactive, outgoing, enthusiastic and dependable.
  • Willingness to jump in and take on leadership roles as needed.
  • Prepared to facilitate various activities with elementary/middle school girls.
  • Preferred but not required:
    • Experience working with children.
    • Bilingual (English/Spanish).
  • Able to regularly communicate by e-mail.
  • Able to interact positively with a variety of people with various cultural backgrounds and economic experiences.
  • Exhibit commitment to social justice and an anti-oppression analysis.
  • Demonstrate commitment to the mission, vision, and advocacy statements of Girls Inc. of Metro Denver.

Time Commitment:
Fall programs run from September 4 th to December 13 th, 2018. Volunteers must be able to commit to at least two 3.5-hour shifts per week for the entire semester. Schedule is the same for the entire semester. Elementary School Programs hours are Monday-Friday from 3:00-6:30p. Middle School Programs are Monday-Thursday from 3:00-6:30p, with occasional optional weekend workshops.

Orientation and Training:
One full day of training is required prior to working with girls:

  • New Volunteer Orientation and Girls Inc.’s Anti-Oppression and Inclusion training, held on Saturday, Sept. 8 th from 8:30a-5:00p.
  • A light breakfast and full lunch will be provided; lunch is on site.
  • Thank you for understanding that we do not make exceptions to this being a required It is offered only three times a year (January, June and September).

Description

Girls Inc. of Metro Denver serves the community through Center Based, Outreach, and Training and Advocacy Programs. In our West and East Denver Centers we have after-school and summer day camp programs for girls ages 6-18. The programs we utilize in our centers and through our Outreach Program strive to build self-esteem and confidence, foster creativity, and promote critical thinking skills.
