Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: American Cancer Society

Lead Role: The role of a Team Coach is intended to help familiarize new teams with Relay For Life and communicate regularly with new and seasoned teams to help them be successful recruiters and fundraisers. Coaches will also help teams feel valued and appreciated and understand the importance of their involvement by educating people on the mission of the American Cancer Society and where the money goes. A Team Coach will coach small groups of teams (5-10) participating in your Relay For Life event by guiding them through the fundraising process and providing the tools, resources, coaching and recognition needed to be successful. A Team Coach communicates regularly with team captains when it fits their schedule in a method that works best for the coach and the team captain - whether it’s an after-work call, e-mail or get-together at a coffee shop or a weekend lunch. This flexibility allows the coach to focus on the heart of what we are trying to do - raise the funds to support the fight against cancer and be a part of an experience that people in your community will remember forever!

Specific tasks can include:

  • Build relationships and serving as the main point of contact for a group of team captains
  • Communicate regularly with team captains through monthly meetings, ongoing calls, texts and email.
  • Empower teams to set fundraising goals and coach them toward meeting their goals.
  • Work with Event Leadership team members and staff partner to provide team captains with fundraising tools, timelines, and ideas that will help them be successful .
  • Find out what motivates the team captains you are supporting. Use these strategies to help keep your teams motivated to reach or exceed their team member and fundraising goals.
  • Ensure all teams are knowledgeable and ready to Relay by providing logistical guidance.
  • Help build momentum, and get teams excited about the event and the cause. Share highlights of fun activities and emotionally charged ceremonies that are planned.
  • Make sure every team captain and Relay participant feels valued and appreciated. Pay attention and provide recognition for big and little wins.
