Volunteers needed to read with kids at Sims Elementary in East Austin!
If you have 30 minutes each week of free time during the school day (8 AM-3 PM) and you can read at a grade-school level, you can help 1st-5th graders learn to love reading! Volunteers will be paired with a "Reading Buddy" with whom they will meet once per week throughout the school year.
Teaching experience is not required--the only requirements are the ability to read (in English and/or Spanish), and the ability to commit to 30 minutes per week from September through May. We will have access to the school's library, and the teachers can also provide books. Volunteers must consent to a background check and complete a 1.5-hour training.
This has been a fun and rewarding experience for volunteers so far. In addition to the benefit of reading skills practice, the kids feel really special to have a "buddy" come to read with them, and they learn that reading is something fun to look forward to! Please contact us if this sounds like something you would enjoy :) This is an especially good fit for retirees, as well as for college students considering going into education.
Please contact Emily Donahue at edonahue@post.harvard.edu or visit education-connection.org/ to volunteer or get more information.

- Providing student and teacher assistance at Norman-Sims Elementary to improve student perfromance and create community around the school (includes reading with students, music for kids, mentoring, teacher appreciation events, and other projects)
- Organizing direct services for the community, including the Neighbor 2 Neighbor food pantry and community center, which s hares food, diapers, utility assistance, and caring community with our low-income neighbors in East Austin, with a special focus on our senior neighbors. In the last two years alone, we have generated 8,000+ of volunteer hours and shared over 320,000 pounds of food and more than 150,000 diapers with our neighbors.
- Discussing and presenting organizational skills to address community problems (such as coordinating and leading a presentation to the school board, city council, or appropriate agency). Leadership for such occasions is on part of, and by, community members. The emphasis is on community empowerment.
