Key Responsibilities
- Engage 3rd or middle school grade students in rigorous science education.
- Prepare materials for hands-on science lessons.
- Assist with instruction of lessons as needed.
- Assist with classroom management.
Volunteer Impact
- Help students to believe and achieve in science.
- Expose under served youth to innovative science and conservation curriculum.
- Spark student interest in science careers.
Commitment
- One 5 hour shift per week until June 28th, 2019.
- Time for the shift varies between 7 am-4 pm.
- A required orientation for all Science Education Mentors.
- Optional but encouraged end of unit Volunteer Appreciation Event!
Requirements
- Must be High School age or older.
- Must pass initial screening.
- Interest in the science, conservation, or education fields.
- Commitment to acting as a role model for under served youth.
- Willing to pay a one-time $25 for an Ocean Discovery Institute volunteer uniform.
Preferred Qualifications
- Interest in gaining education experience in a classroom and field setting.
- Ability to communicate in Spanish or other languages.

Description
The programs of Ocean Discovery Institute offer intensive, hands-on learning opportunities for disadvantaged children and youth. Programs are offered throughout the year. The programs employ three basic strategies: classroom and field-based programming in partnership with Title 1 schools, intensive after-school and summer programs, community-based habitat restoration events.
