Assist with the general administration duties needed to operate a Head Start Center. Head Start preschools offers high quality education for children ages 3-5. Community Action Partnership of Ramsey & Washington Counties is committed to providing low-income families assistance.

Essential Functions:

Duties & Responsibilities:

Variety of tasks associated with administering a busy preschool which may include:

  • Interact with parents and family members of the students, example: may need to call to obtain absence reason
  • Assist with observation note-taking in classrooms
  • Help edit the Center newsletter, answer the telephone and welcome visitors
  • Conduct internet research, data entry, physical filing, and maintain supply inventory
  • Occasionally assist as a classroom helper, chaperone field trips, or help with Family Fun (Friday morning once per month) or other events, if needed
  • Help with the orientation and coordination of volunteers at the Center
  • Aid the Center’s staff or Family Advocates, as assigned by the Center Education Coordinator
  • Other duties as assigned

Safety: Responsible for conducting all duties in a safe manner.

Affirmative Action: Responsible to follow affirmative action plan as set forth and signed by the Board of Directors.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must possess or be pursuing a Certification, Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, K-6 Principal Licensure, child/youth development skills, education, child psychology or related field
  • High school diploma/GED required
  • Valid driver’s license and access to an automobile desired

Abilities & Skills: In order to be successful in this position, the volunteer will at minimum need to possess the following abilities and skills:

  • Ability to work as a member of a team
  • Show interest in and enjoy working with young children
  • Able to physically respond to the demands of active 3-5 year old children
  • Able to work independently after task described, ask for help when needed
  • Computer and data entry (typing skills)
  • Customer service skills
  • Must be comfortable interacting with people of diverse backgrounds, education, economic status, and culture
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information in a professional and discreet manner
  • Fluency in English language (written and spoken). Bilingual in Hmong, Karen, Nepali, Somali, Spanish or another language desired
  • Must successfully pass a criminal background check and provide references
  • Ability to turn in timesheet on a monthly basis to the Volunteer Specialist

Physical Requirements:

Normal office exertion required. Ability to lift 20 lbs desired.

Mental Requirements:

This position requires the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks under sometimes stressful conditions. Must be able to function independently with minimal supervision, accept support as needed, and be an effective team member. Must be self-motivated, dependable, and demonstrate both leadership skills and mature judgment abilities.

Environmental Requirements:

Normal office and preschool environment.

Time Commitment:

Minimum of 4 hours per week for at least one semester or 3+ months. Must be available during weekday daytime business hours. Occasional evening events may occur, depending upon the schedule and your availability. Fall semester or spring semester only.

Location:

There are several Head Start Center locations in St Paul; one in New Brighton and one in North St Paul, MN. Most are located on or near public transportation routes. Your assignment will be based upon your availability and the Center’s need.
