ORGANIZATION: ArtSpan

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

ArtSpan is hosting our Community Mural Project for the 6th year at the 20th Street Block Party!

This activity engages San Francisco event visitors to participate in a collaborative painting activity facilitated by ArtSpan artists. We start with an original, small-scale, mural design that is gridded off into small, square cells. Each participant selects a square and reinterprets the original imagery on their own mini-canvas. In the end, hundreds of individual participants will contribute to a collaborative 4’ x 6’ mural.

Volunteers assist with the activity by performing the following duties:

- Recruit participants and explain the project
- Maintain paints and materials
- Keep the painting tables clean, well-stocked, and orderly
- Assemble the mini-canvases onto the mural board
- Assist with set-up and clean-up
- Tell participants about ArtSpan and our programs

Come dressed in your painting clothes and comfortable shoes. You will be outdoors and on your feet. Bring layers, sunscreen, and water to drink.

Volunteer shifts area as follows:

11:30am-2:00pm (3 volunteers)
2:00pm-4:30pm (3 volunteers)
4:00pm-6:30pm (3 volunteers)

Mission Statement

ArtSpan is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to building connections within San Francisco's visual arts community and between that community and the general public.

Description

In 1975, a small group of enterprising artists who wanted to make artwork accessible to the public founded San Francisco Open Studios. Through this program, artists around San Francisco open their studios to the public during the four weekends of October. The program gives both emerging and established San Francisco artists the opportunity to invite the public into their workspaces, sell artwork, build mailing lists and gain exposure. Open Studios is a fun, unique way for the public to meet artists, see where artwork is created, explore San Francisco's diverse neighborhoods and build collections. The program has grown to include 900 artists and 60,000 participants' making it San Francisco's most popular and best-attended, free visual art event. Art for City Youth (ACY) helps 5,500 students enjoy art with professional artists. The program gives artists experience working with youth and publicizes their ability to work with schools and community groups. The program consists of three projects: Kaleidoscope (hands-on art making), ArtSpan Tours for Youth (art appreciation activities).
