Come volunteer with The Unusual Suspects! We need office assistants for data input and administrative help, photographers and videographers, volunteer mentors, and more who can donate their time in supporting our organization!
The Unusual Suspects has a mission to mentor, educate, and enrich underserved youth through the creation of collaborative, original theatre. Our programs serve the incarcerated and at-risk youth of Los Angeles County and promote a collective, participatory process that results in a live performance.
Our youth write their own play as an ensemble and learn the value of teamwork. By working together, they discover the power of collaboration, as well as individual skills, in an encouraging and creative environment.
You will be able to support and witness our work firsthand through the voices of our youth as they perform a show written entirely by themselves, about issues that affect their lives and communities.*Office volunteers ideally commit to a minimum of 3 hours in the office on a single day, and at least one day per month.
*Photography and videography commitments are a few hours at a single event or student performance
*Volunteer Mentor commitments are a few hours per week at one school site over the course of 2-3 months
Requirements:
- Must have own reliable transportation
- Must have reliable equipment to perform necessary functions
- Must pass a background check

The mission of The Unusual Suspects Theatre Company is to mentor, educate, and enrich underserved youth through the creation of collaborative, original theatre. The vision of The Unusual Suspects Theatre Company is a world where all youth are given the opportunities and support they need to succeed.
Description
US provides 10 to 12 weeks of theatre workshops every year for various middle schools, high schools, and juvenile detention facilities. US youth participants work under the guidance of up to ten Teaching Artists and volunteers, all of whom receive special training. Workshops culminate in a public performance of the youth's original script.
While the public performances are a culminating high point for the workshops, The Unusual Suspects emphasize the in-depth workshop process as the reason for our work. The process is designed to encourage youth to work as an ensemble, which requires them to be expressive, respectful and willing to listen to others. The ensemble offers a structured social environment that is very different from what the youth usually experience, one where they are free from fear of violence, gang pressure, and social alienation, among other issues.
