ORGANIZATION: CAP Tulsa

CAP Tulsa has an Advanced ESL (English language learners) class that needs help having actual conversations with English speaking people. They meet every other week. It’s a fun group, mostly women in their twenties and early thirties.

The class begins Tuesday Sept 13, 2018 and runs every other Monday through December 3rd, 2018 from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Union 9th Grade Center at 76th and Garnett, Union ALC, Room 1413.

The ESL specialist will be there for the first couple of sessions and show up periodically. We have an Agenda in place for conversation topics and can also brainstorm with the participants for ideas or topics to cover in the sessions. The volunteer facilitator will take the lead.

Class dates are Tues Sept 13, and then Mondays on Sept 24, Oct 8, Oct 15, Nov 5, Nov 19, and Dec 3.

Discussion Topics:

13-SepShort Talks- Creating topic cards for participants. Each participant will draw a card, let them gather their thoughts about the topic and then participant is assigned time limit (1 to 4 minutes) to share their thought about the topic. TBDUnion ALC, Room 1413 11:30am- 12:30pm

24-SepShow and Tell- Participants will be asked to bring an object to do a show and tell. The key to have them engage in a conversation is that ask them to pick something that is meaningful to them.

8-Oct Giving objects, pictures or written situations(How to act on different situations) to them in order to have them explain and discuss answers.

15-Oct Having Board Games such as Taboo, Apples to apples, scrabble, upwards, Catch Phrase, Jenga. This type of activity will help students with learning new vocabulary, listening, speaking, reading and writing.

5-NovCreating a Jeopardy Game about the CAPTulsa ESL Program and English Language and form multiple groups among participants to compete against each other.

19-Nov Superstitions: Discussing cultural or regional superstitions can help participants focus on new vocabulary, listening, speaking skills.

3-Dec Discussing current events from media platforms. Participants will be asked to find a current topic whether local or global and share their opinion with the class(assigned time 1-4 minutes)
