General Description:
The Mystic Valley Opportunity Center English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program assists clients who wish to learn English. The ESOL Instructor Volunteers will assist ABCD staff and students in the Mystic Valley ESOL program.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Instruct adult ESOL students at the beginner level and craft learning experiences that will lead to the achievement of their educational goals (ex. Reading, listening speaking)
- Implement lesson plans for instructional sessions and adapt curriculum to student needs and interests
- Utilize appropriate lesson plans, conversational topics, activities, and homework to match/observe student progress
- Maintain attendance records and track students’ progress over the duration of a semester
Skills & Qualifications:
- Volunteers MUST commit to teaching two sessions weekly, each session lasting 2 hours, adhering to either Schedule One or Schedule two below (excluding holidays in November and December)
- Must be able to work sensitively and effectively with individuals of diverse educational, socio economic, and cultural backgrounds. Familiarity with the Malden community is encouraged
- Must have excellent organizational, management, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated familiarity with computers and automated systems
- Previous teaching experience preferred
- Bilingual in a language spoken by ABCD clients desired (Spanish, Haitian Creole, Cape Verdean Creole, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Portuguese, Arabic, Russian)
Length of Commitment:
September 2018 - May 2019
Schedule One:
Monday and Wednesday 3pm to 5pm, 9/17/18 through 5/3/19
