ORGANIZATION: JVS, Jewish Vocational Service

JVS 2017

Class meets on Tuesdays from 5:30pm-8pm.

Program/Department Overview:

JVS works with employers to develop and customize training and education services for their employees at their location. Based on the employers’ business and workforce development goals, JVS will provide: English language classes (for non-native speakers), adult basic education, pre-college classes, customer service training, effective communication classes, supervisory training, computer classes, and medical terminology classes. Employer partners include CVS, Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates, Legal Sea Foods, Hebrew Senior Life, Partners Healthcare, Brigham & Women’s Hospital, Children’s Hospital, Mass General Hospital, and many more.

Description of Class:

Professional Communication is a 12 week course that is offered for international post-docs and research fellow at MGH. The goal of the class is to give students a chance to work on speaking fluency and confidence as well as pronunciation. Classes cover communication skills and vocabulary for both the workplace (networking at conferences, speaking up at meetings, and giving brief presentations) as well as for their daily life (how to order in a restaurant, American culture and idioms). Many of the students usually have a strong grasp of English reading and writing, but struggle with fluency, or with colloquial expressions, or cultural expectations.

Volunteer qualifications: Patience and understanding of adult learners. Willingness to work in group setting with non-native English speakers. Interest in helping MGH research fellows improve their pronunciation, conversation, and professionalism skills.
