ORGANIZATION: The San Diego River Park Foundation

Park Watch

Do you enjoy exploring your community on foot? You can volunteer in your neighborhood just by walking!

The San Diego River Park Foundation has picked up over 2.5 million pounds of trash from along our San Diego River since 2001. You can help with this important work by identifying and mapping trash locations in Santee, Mission Valley, along the River Estuary (between Mission Bay and Ocean Beach), as part of our volunteer Park Watch program.

Park Watchers independently walk a 2-5 mile section of the San Diego River Trail on a weekly or monthly basis. Volunteers use a custom smartphone-based app to map where they see trash along the River. The collected data is not only used to help plan trash cleanup, but also shared with stakeholders, researchers, and policy makers.

To participate, volunteers must have and feel confident using an Apple or Android-based data device (such as an iPhone). Mapping training is provided.

This opportunity is ideally suited to volunteers who want to work independently, on their own schedule. Dogs, kids, and friends are all welcome to join you on your walks! Community service is not available for this opportunity. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.
