If you’re looking for a way to get involved with the fiercest gingerbread house decorating competition in Madison, you’ve come to the right place! Each December, Canopy Center hosts its annual Gingerbread Casas for CASA event at the Madison Children’s Museum. Groups are invited to square off in a gingerbread house or "casa" decorating competition. Local celebrities judge the entries and declare a winner!

This is an incredibly fun, one-of-a-kind event, but beyond that it also serves a very important purpose. The proceeds from the event benefit the Dane County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program and its parent organization Canopy Center. CASA provides volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocates to abused or neglected children who are under the protection or authority of the Dane County Courts. These volunteers provide an additional set of eyes and ears for the courts by meeting weekly with their assigned child and using their observations to help the courts make more informed decisions regarding what’s in the child’s best interests.

As a member of the Gingerbread Casas for CASA event planning committee, you would be contributing to the organizational and fundraising tasks leading up to the event, which are critical to its success. There will also be opportunities to provide support on the weekend of the event.

Potential Duties and Activities

• Package and send mass mailings to businesses for sponsorships and donations
• Make follow-up calls to solicit event sponsorships and donations
• Publicizing events to the community
• Assist with prep, set-up, clean-up, and other duties as needed during the event itself
• General office work related to event planning

Time Commitment

• Attend planning meetings related to the event as needed.
• Commit to at least one 2-hour volunteer shift during the event.

Qualifications

• Complete a Volunteer Application, clear a background check, and attend a volunteer interview.
• Ability to work with a diverse population.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and objectivity.
• Access to reliable transportation.
• Warm, friendly demeanor and positive attitude. Displays professionalism in person and over the phone.

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

• Experience with fundraising and/or cold-calling for donations
• Computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office
• Excellent organizational skills
• Ability to work as part of a team that collaborates on ideas
• Must be flexible and able to work where needed
