The Thurston Climate Action Team (TCAT) board comprises leaders from local government, higher education, health care, financial services, and consulting who are dedicated to the organization’s mission. Serving on the Thurston Climate Action Team’s Board of Directors is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about protecting our region from the worst effects of climate change while promoting clean energy and other solutions which contribute to the vibrancy and health of our communities.

Board members are expected to have the financial acumen to read and understand TCAT’s financial statements and to otherwise help the board fulfill its fiduciary responsibilities.

Board members are expected to attend twelve two-hour board meetings per year. They are expected to read board materials in advance of board meetings and to come prepared to ask questions and participate in discussions.

Board members are expected to serve on one or more committees of the board and to actively participate in committee work.

Board members are expected to leverage personal relationships and connections to help the development committee and staff identify and solicit potential funders.

Board members are expected to bring their knowledge of community needs and concerns related to climate change, the local economy, various sectors of the Thurston County population, public health needs, social justice concerns, and the interconnection among these issues, to board discussions and decision making. Board members are expected to represent TCAT responsibly to their respective communities and to advocate for TCAT’s mission, programs, and services as appropriate.

Board terms last for three years and board members can serve for up to three consecutive terms.

Desired Skills and Expertise

We are especially interested in diverse leaders with expertise in Fundraising and Community Outreach.

The following profiles describe in further detail these two areas of expertise. TCAT’s interest in board members is not limited to those who fit one or both of these profiles.

PROFILE 1:

Fundraising

TCAT seeks an individual experienced in fundraising who has planned and implemented fundraising strategies and campaigns to support an organization’s core mission. We seek a board leader to help cultivate the board’s leadership role in fundraising in support of staff as part of a broader commitment to increase financial support for our mission. The ideal board candidate should have prior nonprofit board member experience or have received formal board training.

PROFILE 2:

Community Outreach Professional

TCAT seeks an a well-connected community leader who is passionate about addressing climate change locally and can leverage his/her networks and resources in support of efforts to positively impact the policy environment in which TCAT does its work. We are especially interested in an individual with local and regional connections to communities of color and low-income communities. The ideal board candidate should have prior nonprofit board member experience or have received formal board training.
