Sojourn Hospice is looking for volunteers who can provide support to patients and families when they need it most. If you are caring, compassionate, and have an open heart, we need you!

What does Sojourn Hospice and Palliative Care do?
Our mission is to affirm the life of the individual who is terminally ill by providing a full continuum of clinical, spiritual and emotional support allowing that individual and their loved ones the ability to cope with the final stages of their life with comfort and dignity.

Who can volunteer?
Anyone who is compassionate and wants to offer support to others. If you are looking to make a difference when it really matters, this could be a great opportunity for you! Our volunteers are from all walks of life, but they do need to be 18 years or older.

What do volunteers do?
Volunteers are an extremely valued and important part of our team. They provide compassionate presence and companionship to our patients, and support to their families. A volunteer's service is unique, based on their own skills/talents and the needs of those they are serving. Some tasks a volunteer may do could include:

  • Being a listening ear
  • Reading a book to someone
  • Playing music for someone
  • Sitting in companionable silence with someone
  • Allowing a family caregiver to take a break while you sit with their loved one
  • Walking a dog
  • Tending a garden

There are also opportunities for volunteers to help with administrative tasks in our office, if interested.

Where do I volunteer?
We serve patients within a 50 mile radius of our office in San Jose. This means we need volunteers from all different areas including:
  • Santa Clara County
  • San Mateo County
  • Alameda County
  • San Francisco
When do I volunteer?
Volunteer schedules are flexible and based on their own availability. You get to decide your schedule! We ask that volunteers provide four hours of service per week, for a minimum of one year.

Is there training?
Our volunteer receive in depth training and on-going support. Volunteers must complete all of our training classes before they are able to start volunteering. This is to ensure that they have the tools needed to offer compassionate presence to our clients. We welcome volunteers as a valuable part of our team and offer support throughout their volunteering experience.

How can I learn more, or take next steps to get involved?
Contact our volunteer coordinator at mrasavanh@sojournhospice.com or at 408-324-0700.
We would love to give your more information, answer your questions, and help you find out if this life changing opportunity is right to you.
