Cornerstone Family Ministries' Community Garden @ Ybor was formed in 2018 with seed funding from United Methodist Women National, NOMADS , The Florida Department of Agriculture and several private donors to address the need for community education and access to fresh fruits and vegetables in one of Tampa’s known food desert areas known as Ybor City. The garden was established for Cornerstone’s program partners serving at-risk children in close proximity to our Ybor City location. The garden is a place where children and their educators and families can learn about where food comes from, how it grows, how to take it home and prepare it, and how it fuels our bodies. It is also a place where our program partners and the families they serve can connect with the larger community to make a positive impact. A successful community garden requires continued general maintenance to ensure that our crops thrive and are planted and harvested in a timely manner. As a garden volunteer some of your tasks would include watering, weeding, pruning/thinning, staking (creating vertical support for the crops), fertilizing, feeding, planting and harvesting. This service opportunity is weekly on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteer opportunities are also available on the 4th Saturday of EVEN months from 9-Noon at the same location. NO PREVIOUS GARDEN EXPERIENCE IS NEEDED. ALL AGES WELCOME. CHILDREN AS YOUNG AS TODDLERS ARE WELCOME WITH A PARENT.

Mission Statement

Cornerstone Family Ministries' mission is to nurture young bodies, develop young minds, and foster hope through Christ....one child at a time.

Description

Cornerstone Family Ministries is a 501c3 that has two programs, one of which is an inner-city child care center. We primarily serve children that live at or below the poverty level. Our mission is to nurture young bodies, develop young minds, and foster hope thru Christ one child at a time. We believe that every child regardless of their background, color of their skin, or living situation deserves quality Christian education and care as well as nutritious food. Our goal is to offer these services and facilitate a pathway out of poverty for the children and families we serve. The Rosa Valdez Early Learning Center and Lab School is essentially a regular child care center. We desire volunteers that work as teacher assistants in the classrooms. The children we serve range in age from infants to 5 years of age. We especially need volunteer help with our 3 and 4 year olds currently. There is weekly commitment required of 2 hours but you are welcome serve more than the two hours. Available hours are 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m..
