Our students are in need of mentors. Studies have shown that students as young as middle school age can benefit greatly from adult mentors and the meaningful relationships that develop. Most of our students will be 1st generation college students and need a mentor to help direct them towards a college path and the vast opportunities that it opens up. We're looking for college students and career professionals to serve as examples for our students, helping them grow in awareness of life opportunities that await them. Mentors will meet at our beautiful site at the California Center for the Arts. Your schedule will depend on your own availability and that of the student but may range from weekly to monthly. Come join our team and make a difference in the life of a youth.

Mission Statement

Provide underserved youth with opportunities that greatly expand their expectations and ambitions through dance education, academic support, and family services.

Description

A Step Beyond was founded by a team of dedicated individuals on our Board of Directors. The journey to realizing a program of this scope began with a partnership for space at The California Center for the Arts in Escondido. From here A Step Beyond was able to launch Fall into Dance in which over 2,000 students from Escondido, San Marcos, and Vista elementary schools participated in a five-day dance outreach program. This program led to the recruitment of an inaugural class of 35 third and fourth graders in October 2014. Each year an additional grade will be added, until the program is serving 30-35 students at each grade level, with an anticipated maximum enrollment of over 300 students. A Step Beyond expects to achieve the full spectrum of grades (3-12) by fall 2022. ASB offers dance education and academic support to our students, in addition to family services. We are currently opening a makerspace and initiating a mentorship program to help develop further skills that will enhance their life opportunities and expectations.
