The Program

The Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center (PCRC) is the leading non-profit on the Peninsula dedicated to alternative dispute resolution and communication. Our collaborative philosophy largely builds on interests-based approach to conflict resolution. We provide mediation, facilitation and training services and we work to engage the community and empower youth and families. Through the Engaging Communities Initiative, we work with local government to engage with the community on a breadth of subjects that impact public policy. Some examples include dialogues on housing, transportation, immigration, as well as other topics. Additionally, PCRC assists with needs assessments from the community’s perspective. PCRC is looking for volunteers who are dedicated to empowering the communities we serve.

The Position

We are looking for volunteers to lead community dialogues and discussions, co-develop a meeting agenda, and be able to facilitate the meeting, including keeping to the agenda and managing meeting time and goals. The ideal candidates will have an understanding of historically underrepresented communities, either through personal or professional experience, good meeting management skills, and be able to exercise cultural humility in the course of his/her work. Because of the nature of the work and the unpredictability of the discussions we might be asked to facilitate, we need volunteers who can exercise some degree of flexibility with scheduling. This opportunity lends itself well to folks who are looking for ways to have an impact on their community!

Candidates must also:

  • Be comfortable with public speaking.
  • Be able to read the audience and adapt as necessary.
  • Be able to scribe or take notes.
  • Be able to work in a team or independently.
  • Be flexible and ready to lead with humility.
  • Have basic facilitation and mediation training.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center (PCRC) is to promote positive collaboration and active engagement by residents in the communities we serve. To accomplish this mission, PCRC trains people to communicate and solve problems together, facilitates group meetings, builds skills for public participation and, as a neutral third party, assists people in conflict to develop mutually acceptable agreements.

Description

The Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center (PCRC), founded in 1986, is a public benefit corporation serving individuals, groups, and organizations throughout San Mateo County. We provide conflict prevention, management, and resolution services and promote the use of non-adversarial processes in a wide variety of situations. PCRC services empower people, build relationships, and reduce violence. As the major provider of community-based conflict management and prevention services in San Mateo County, PCRC can put its experience to work for you. Our small professional staff supports nearly 200 trained volunteers from many ethnic, social, educational and vocational backgrounds who serve as mediators, facilitators and communication trainers. Through its mediation programs, PCRC staff and volunteers help clients identify problems, clarify perspectives and concerns, develop viable options, and reach durable and mutually satisfactory agreements. As the result of PCRC's outreach and training efforts, more and more people are recognizing the value of collaborative approaches to working through complex situations and developing workable agreements.
