The three balloons (Uncle Sam, Eagle and Purple Heart) require balloon Handlers to carry the balloons down the parade route. When available, the Army (Arizona Army National Guard and Reserves), the Air Force (Active Component and Arizona Air National Guard), the Navy and Marine Reserves provide 40 service members to fulfill this role. Each balloon requires 12 balloon handlers. The committee attempts to provide all women handlers for the Rosie the Riveter balloon. Gloves are provided to all balloon carriers and must be collected by volunteers in the de-staging areas.
