We are looking for volunteers to assist with events and distribution of marketing materials celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Maryland Clean Indoor Air Law and promoting a new e-cigarette prevention campaign. We will have a booth at the Maryland State Fair where volunteers will be interacting with the public.
Volunteers will celebrate this landmark anniversary year through the execution of events that will educate community members about the campaigns and bring awareness to the impact that the Clean Air Law has had on the Maryland community. Volunteers will distribute campaign outreach materials.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Volunteer at the Maryland Health Department's booth at the Maryland State Fair
- Distribute outreach materials at the event
- Interact with the public to inform others about these initiatives
- Uphold goals of the initiatives
- Complete recaps and submit photos from the event
Events & Outreach:
- Maryland State Fair (8/23/18 - 9/3/18)
- Volunteer at a booth and discuss the campaign with attendees.
- Three shifts available each day - between 10:00am to 10:00pm
- Each shift is approximately 3-4 hours
- Welcome to work more than one shift
- Distribute Marketing Materials celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Maryland Clean Indoor Air Law and information on The Vape Experiment
Training Session:
We will be conducting a phone training session with each volunteers before their shift.
- The training session will cover:
- Be educated on the Smoke-Free Air initiative and 'The Vape Experiment’
- Be guided through the details of the outreach programs
- Practice marketing techniques
- Learn how to engage with the community
- Learn how to create brand awareness at events
- Training will include specifics of event responsibilities
Community Service Hours:
- Volunteers will receive community service hours of eligible work towards required school community service hours

Requirements & Commitment:
- Must not be tobacco or e-cigarette users (including juuls and vapes)
- Participate in a training session / call
- Willing to volunteer at one event or participate in one outreach program

Mission Statement
The Center for Tobacco Prevention and Control works with community partners, state agencies, healthcare entities, resource centers, and local health departments to implement proven strategies to protect Maryland residents from tobacco-related death and disease.
Description
The overall goals for the Center are to:
- Prevent youth and young adults from ever using tobacco products
- Provide resources to assist residents who are ready to quit using tobacco
- Eliminate exposure to harmful toxins found in secondhand smoke
- Identify and eliminate health disparities among population groups disproportionately affected by tobacco-related death and disease.
Maryland has made great strides in reducing tobacco use and its harmful effects.
- Rates of tobacco use among Maryland adults and youth have decreased since 2000.
- Exposure to secondhand smoke has declined due to state and local laws prohibiting smoking inside public places (restaurants, bars, workplaces, transit)
- The number of Maryland residents who have never smoked has increased.
