Breaking Ground, NYC’s largest provider of supportive housing and street outreach for the city’s homeless population, is in need of volunteers for an borough-wide garden soiree for our residents, some of whom have come a long way from some very dark places.

Beyond providing folks with four walls and a roof, we strive to be a support system as well for the people we serve with the many services and resources we provide. Once indoors, many of our clients are able to reclaim their lives and dignity, and we help them on their path to re-socialization with the help of volunteers though our community-building events. These events typically include BBQs, art shows, health fairs and large dinners, where volunteers come to help facilitate the events, but more importantly, they engage with our residents, creating a more welcoming space for them to come home to.

The soiree is to take place on Wednesday, August 15th, 2018 at the the Brook, and is being designed to expand upon our buildings’ individual communities.

Date: Wednesday, August 15th, 2018
Time: 3:00pm - 7:00pm
Address:455 East 148th Street, Bronx, NY 10455
Volunteers needed: 10

Volunteers can expect to help facilitate this event by decorating the event space, working the grill, serving food and refreshments, taking photographs, and most importantly, engaging with our residents and creating a warm and inviting space for them. Our residents love being in the company of volunteers; we’d be so grateful to have you!

Mission Statement

Breaking Ground’s mission is to strengthen individuals, families and communities by developing and sustaining exceptional supportive and affordable housing as well as programs for homeless and other vulnerable New Yorkers.

Description

At Breaking Ground, we believe that everyone deserves a home.

That’s why, since 1990, we have been providing permanent affordable housing for individuals and families who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

Beginning with a single building, we are now New York City’s largest provider of supportive housing. We own and/or operate 24 properties with over 3,530 apartments in New York City and beyond.

  • For chronically homeless people, we create safe, secure housing with essential on-site support services to help them address the psychosocial, mental, and physical health problems that are obstacles to independent living.
  • For those at risk of homelessness, our affordable housing provides an all-important safety net.

Our work has enabled more than 13,000 people to overcome or avoid homelessness since 1990, and we increase that number every single day. At the start of 2016, we have nearly 1,000 units of housing in various stages of development in the Bronx and Brooklyn, and are significantly expanding our Street to Home homelessness outreach program so that we can offer help to every single homeless person we meet.
