President Lincoln's Cottage is looking for friendly volunteers to help with various tasks during our annual Freedom 5K race. Our annual 5K raises money to support our efforts to combat human trafficking. We’re looking for volunteers to help the race day-of and would love to see you on the grounds again! The Freedom 5K will place during our Homecoming event on Saturday, September 22, 2018, from 7:30 am to 11 am.

The Freedom 5K is a unique opportunity for members of the public to race through the 250-acre grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home - home to hundreds of veterans who fought for freedom - in NW Washington, DC. Proceeds and donations from the run support the mission of President Lincoln’s Cottage, a private non-profit organization.

President Lincoln's Cottage is looking for volunteers to help out with a variety of responsibilities, including:

  • Racecourse setup/takedown (marking off the course, setting up tables, etc.)
  • Handing out water to runners/walkers
  • Packet pick-up and on-site registration

**All volunteers will be provided with breakfast, snacks, PLC swag, and have a chance to see parts of the grounds of the Armed Forces Retirement Home that are not usually open to the public.**

Mission Statement

Mission: Bring the world to "the cradle of the Emancipation Proclamation," and connect with Lincoln through his untold stories. Vision: Meet the true Lincoln and continue his fight for freedom.

Description

President Lincoln’s Cottage is an historic site and museum located in the Petworth neighborhood of northwest Washington, D.C. President Lincoln’s Cottage first opened to the public in February 2008, after an eight-year capital restoration project under the auspices of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. It is the only place the public can experience the history of Abraham Lincoln’s public and private life where he lived and worked for over a quarter of his presidency. While in residence at the Cottage, Lincoln visited with wounded soldiers, spent time with self-emancipated men, women and children, and developed the Emancipation Proclamation. The human cost of the Civil War surrounded him, undoubtedly impacted his thinking, and strengthened his resolve to challenge the status quo. Through innovative guided tours, exhibits and programs, we use Lincoln’s example to inspire visitors to take their own path to greatness, and preserve this place as an authentic, tangible connection to the past and a beacon of hope for all who take up Lincoln’s unfinished work.
