We’re searching for our next Executive Director. In this role, you will have the unique opportunity to positively influence the lives of the thousands of LGBTQ asylum seekers in the U.S. You will lead all aspects of nonprofit development, and ensure the AsylumConnect resource catalog reaches its full potential. We’re looking for an individual who is deeply passionate about LGBTQ rights and firmly believes that seeking asylum is a fundamental human right. *Note: This opportunity is currently remote and unpaid. Estimated time commitment: ~10-20 hrs/week.

Key Responsibilities

Lead Fundraising Strategy & Ensure Financial Sustainability

  • Partner with the Director of Fundraising and the Director of Finance on the creation and implementation of a comprehensive annual fundraising plan.
  • Work to raise sufficient funding to hire first paid full-time staff.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with individual donors, foundations, and corporate sponsors.
  • Cultivate a portfolio of priority donor relationships.
  • Responsible for the fiscal integrity of AsylumConnect, to include submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and monthly financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition of the organization.
  • Responsible for fiscal management that generally anticipates operating within the approved budget, ensures maximum resource utilization, and maintenance of the organization in a positive financial position.
  • Responsible for fundraising and developing other resources necessary to support AsylumConnect’s mission.

Organizational Leadership

  • Provide strategic leadership for activities and financial sustainability.
  • Lead day-to-day operations of AsylumConnect; Directly manage the AsylumConnect volunteer leadership team.
  • Lead monthly director meetings for volunteer leadership team; Schedule department and one-on-one check-in meetings as needed.
  • Represent AsylumConnect at key presentations, conferences, fundraising events, partner meetings, and donor meetings.
  • Provide quarterly progress reports on AsylumConnect’s operations to the AsylumConnect Board of Directors and Advisory Council.
  • Support the Board of Directors to successfully carry out its roles and meet its goals. Cultivate relationships with and among Board members, and between Board and volunteers.

Qualifications

  • Deep commitment to and passion for LGBTQ rights.
  • Experience with or knowledge of the asylum process in the U.S.
  • A bachelor’s degree. Graduate degree (e.g. M.B.A., J.D., M.S.) preferred.
  • Transparent and high integrity leadership.
  • Senior nonprofit management experience strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to nonprofit sector.
  • Experience with online communication tools (e.g. G Suite, Slack, Zoom, Asana Project Management).
  • Experience leading in a remote environment preferred.
  • Experience with volunteer management preferred.
  • Experience with product management and/or the technical development process preferred.
  • Accessible to AsylumConnect volunteers, Advisory Council and Board of Directors.
  • Willingness to make a minimum 2-year commitment to this role.

Co-founded by a gay asylum seeker and lesbian in 2014 at the University of Pennsylvania, AsylumConnect is a tech nonprofit on a mission to provide LGBTQ asylum seekers with the verified information and sense of community they need to safely integrate in their new home. The AsylumConnect catalog, available on web and mobile devices, is the first ever online resource catalog for LGBTQ asylum seekers in the U.S. The catalog helps LGBTQ asylum seekers find safe, high-quality resources during the U.S. asylum process. Nonprofits, immigration attorneys, and other service providers also use this free, online database to gather verified resource referrals for clients.

So far, AsylumConnect has raised over $35,000 in start-up funding, and received recognition and support from the United Nations (UN), Clinton Foundation, Harvard Social Enterprise Conference, Awesome Without Borders, U.S. Committee for Refugees & Immigrants (USCRI), and others.
