Do you like talking on the phone?
Do you get a charge out of speaking with seniors?
Is making a difference in the lives of others important to you?
Then consider volunteering to be a TeleCare worker!
What is TeleCare?
TeleCare is a FREE telephone-based service for valued community members such as seniors and people with disabilities. It offers a regular connection and supports caregiving and services already in place.
Many residents who live alone face the danger that a fall, stroke or sudden illness could incapacitate them to the point that they may not be able to seek immediate help. One of the most effective means of reducing isolation, victimization, and health concerns is daily contact through a telephone reassurance call.
TeleCare offers:
- Emotional support and a friendly check-in
- Medication reminders and well-being checks
- Temporary support upon hospital discharge
TeleCare provides clients the comfort of knowing that someone will contact them on a regular basis. It also offers families the peace of mind that their loved ones are being checked on. Each client has a safety plan in place and a designated contact is alerted if we are unable to reach a client by telephone.
How do TeleCare Volunteers make a difference?
Volunteers make calls to our clients between 7am and 10pm, seven days per week at our office in East Syracuse, NY. We will train you to use our phone and the basic computer program that is used to record call notes. You will then shadow a trainer as they make calls, and later have a trainer sit with you to provide support while you make calls. There is always support in place to help with any questions that might come up.
This is an ideal opportunity for one senior to reach out to other seniors in the community. We are also now accepting applications from mature and responsible high school students. All volunteers must complete a volunteer application and interview.
