Communications Associate Internship
(Internship 10 - 15 hours weekly)
ORGANIZATION:
PCRC is a communication and dispute resolution non-profit organization serving San Mateo County for over 30 years. We are a dynamic organization, with a team of 27-30 highly skilled staff, and over 200 dedicated volunteers. We partner with individuals, groups and institutions to empower people, build relationships, and reduce violence through collaborative and innovative processes. We assist clients in solving their most complex personal, organizational, and social challenges by utilizing strategies in mediation, facilitation, training and coaching. We rely on our organizational principles of inclusivity, congruency, collaboration, communication and respect to positively impact communities throughout the county.
We are looking for an enthusiastic Communications Associate to assist manage our internal and external communications. Under the overall guidance of the PCRC Executive Director and the direct supervision of the PCRC Director of Operations, the Communications intern will support the development and implementation of the communication strategy to increase the standing and awareness of PCRC with partners, the media and the general public. The ideal candidate is imaginative, creative and a phenomenal storyteller with excellent writing, editing and oral communication skills:
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Corporate Communications:
- Assist the ongoing development and implementation of an effective corporate communications strategy.
- Support the agency in generate multimedia content including text, photos, videos, info-graphics, factographs and human interest stories for PCRC’s website and social media accounts.
- Manage and monitor social media accounts and website and actively expand the network of followers.
- Media outreach: research and secure placement of content opportunities within San Mateo. Assist in writing and distributing news articles, media releases and public announcements, if needed.
- Support the drafting of PCRC’s Annual Report and other printed material.
QUALIFICATIONS
- In process of obtaining a bachelor degree or equivalent in communication, journalism, creative writing, online communication, multimedia communication, etc.
- Passionate about storytelling.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including a confident presence with large and small audiences.
- Knowledge of social media use and management.
- Familiarity with programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Adobe, etc. desirable.
- Knowledge of content management systems and similar such as Squarespace, Wordpress, a plus
- Familiarity with the principles of conflict resolution and collaborative problem solving
- Ability to manage flexible work schedule, including early mornings, most evenings and weekend work.
- If not trained at time of hire, PCRC encourages candidates to take the training to be completed outside of work hours.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative in a fast-paced work environment.
- Ability to deal with ambiguity.
- Ability to remain neutral and professional in emotionally charged situations.
- Willingness to promote the integrity and professionalism of PCRC.
- Reliable transportation, valid driver’s license and appropriate auto insurance.

Description
The Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center (PCRC), founded in 1986, is a public benefit corporation serving individuals, groups, and organizations throughout San Mateo County. We provide conflict prevention, management, and resolution services and promote the use of non-adversarial processes in a wide variety of situations. PCRC services empower people, build relationships, and reduce violence. As the major provider of community-based conflict management and prevention services in San Mateo County, PCRC can put its experience to work for you. Our small professional staff supports nearly 200 trained volunteers from many ethnic, social, educational and vocational backgrounds who serve as mediators, facilitators and communication trainers. Through its mediation programs, PCRC staff and volunteers help clients identify problems, clarify perspectives and concerns, develop viable options, and reach durable and mutually satisfactory agreements. As the result of PCRC's outreach and training efforts, more and more people are recognizing the value of collaborative approaches to working through complex situations and developing workable agreements.
