Deliver BackPack(tm) sacks to local schools! The BackPack Program(tm) is designed to lessen the consequence of chronic childhood hunger by providing a sack of kid-friendly, easy-to-prepare foods to low-income elementary school children on weekends when they do not have access to the federal free and reduced-price meal program.

Volunteers will take the Food Bank of Iowa's van and deliver BackPack(tm) sacks to Des Moines area schools. Shifts will take place on Friday mornings from 8:45am to 11:00am.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in loading BackPack boxes into the van for delivery
  • Use the Food Bank of Iowa van to deliver BackPack sack boxes to local schools
  • Assist the school in unloading the BackPack boxes onto a cart
  • Return the van to the Food Bank of Iowa

Qualifications:

  • Able to stand, move, bend, and lift 30 lbs.
  • Valid drivers license
  • 18 years of age or older

Support/Training: Instructions will be provided on-site at the beginning of the shift. A map with the route along with a GPS will be provided.

Age Requirement:
Minimum age of 18

Dress Code:
Closed-toed shoes are required; no exceptions. Dress comfortably.

  • Shelters for victims of domestic violence
  • Nonprofit day care centers
  • Residential care centers
  • Child and senior programs

Along with traditional food banking, the Food Bank of Iowa also operates three successful programs: Backpack Buddies, HUSH and the Fresh Produce Project.
