We offer nature outings, expressive arts, and wellness groups for refugee youth and families.

Volunteers are needed to drive participants to and from program activities, as many of our participants don't have access to transportation. We also need support during programming by offering guidance and encouragement to participants.

Volunteers have the opportunity to build relationships while interacting with participants--learning about their families, cultures, and experiences. Strengthen skills in youth mentoring, particularly within culturally diverse communities.

This is a recurring opportunity, but dates and times are not set. We usually have programming on Tuesday evenings and Saturdays and Sundays. We are looking for volunteers who are able to commit to being involved on a regular basis.

Qualifications:

  • Flexible, open minded and patient
  • Willing to work with intergenerational population of mixed abilities, backgrounds and cultures
  • Excellent person to person skills
  • Must have energy to keep up with participants
  • Wiling to learn and problem solve
  • Responsible, consistently available on Tuesday evenings
  • Committed to social justice issues

Mission Statement

To provide meaningful and healing expressive arts experiences in the community and the natural world for refugee families resettled in Tucson who have been impacted by trauma, torture and traumatic dislocation. To help educate the community and beyond, about refugees in order to foster acceptance. And to honor the efforts of our volunteers who make this work possible.

Description

We seek to create a nurturing environment in which families can heal and to make our families and each person as whole as possible. Through words, art, and trips into nature, members of OP’s intergenerational group share with each other and the community while boosting their own literacy and confidence. Through safe, nurturing, group experiences, participants are able to heal and develop a sense of belonging.
