  • Work together with a team to canvass homes, educate residents and install smoke detectors in homes without them. Each team will consist of three or more people performing three tasks: Installer, Documenter and Safety Educator.
  • The Installer is responsible for installing smoke alarms with the resident’s permission, and within manufacturer’s and program guidelines. The installer must have completed required training to conduct smoke alarm installation and be able to climb a ladder and use necessary tools.
  • The Documenter is responsible for ensuring that the correct forms are completed by the installation team and the homeowner. Also responsible for keeping track of the number of smoke alarms installed and supplies used.
  • The Safety Educator is responsible for reviewing a fire safety checklist with the resident, assisting the resident in completing a household disaster plan, reviewing priorities, risks and preparedness steps/protective actions, and providing helpful safety information.

Canvassing and installation events are scheduled regularly throughout the region. Canvassing is often done on weekdays, while the education and installation events are usually held on weekends. Shifts are 4-6 hours and refreshment are provided.

  • 16 years of age or older. Able to walk comfortably on uneven sidewalks and able to use stairs while carrying 10-20 pounds.
  • Friendly and outgoing personality and ability to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds in a sympathetic and caring manner.
  • Willingness to support the Red Cross mission and the goals of the Home Fire Preparedness Campaign.
  • Installers should be familiar with the use of hand tools and be able to climb a ladder.
  • Documenters should have excellent organizational skills and legible handwriting.
  • The Safety Educator should have some familiarity with community disaster education or disaster response.
