Description of Duties:

The Historic Housecleaner will work alongside the Curator to perform necessary monthly cleaning inside the Saxton McKinley House. The House is an 1840’s Victorian mansion and the ancestral home of First Lady Ida Saxton McKinley.

Responsibilities:

  • Light dusting of artifacts and non-artifacts in the home
  • Sweeping floors and vacuuming rugs
  • Looking for signs of rodent or insect infiltration
  • Check items for catalog numbers - alert Curator to items without tags
  • Check items being cleaned for signs of decay, damage, etc and alert the Curator
  • Potentially assist with Condition Reports on specific items or artifacts within the house

Training and Experience:

The ideal volunteer for this position will:

  • Be willing to learn and work alongside the Curator
  • Be detail oriented
  • Be comfortable bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods
  • Be comfortable handling and lifting objects, including artifacts up to 50 lbs
  • Have no severe allergies to dust
  • Have an interest in working in a historic home and/or learning more about curatorial responsibilities and tasks
  • Have some knowledge and/or prior experience to best practices for cleaning historic homes

As a national archive devoted to educating people about the contributions of First Ladies and other notable women in history, the Library's holdings fill an informational void that has long frustrated academicians and armchair history buffs alike. The Library fulfills this mission by serving as a physical educational facility and an electronic virtual library, in an effort to educate people in the United States and around the world.

Located in 2 buildings, the National First Ladies' Library provides interpretive tours to the general public on the achievements of our nation's First Ladies and the life of Ohio First Lady, Ida Saxton McKinley. Educational programs for people of various ages are also available throughout the year.
