The City of Philadelphia’s Food Access Fellows fall program offers an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate-level students to contribute to fighting hunger in Philadelphia’s most vulnerable populations.

The Food Access Fellows will engage in capacity-building work with identified meal providers and facilitate collaboration with social service organizations. Fellows will help to increase both the quantity and quality of emergency meals served in Philadelphia, as well as the interconnectedness of social service organizations. In the process, Fellows will gain valuable experience for careers in City government and the non-profits sector.

Please note: this is an unpaid position that will take place during the fall of 2018. Fellows must commit to working 10-15 hours per week, from September to the 2nd week of December. Some of these hours will be spent in the OHS office, and some will be spent at meal sites.

Fellow responsibilities include:

  • Working with meal sites on capacity building efforts to improve programs and services
  • Collaborating with meal site supervisors to design and implement needed processes
  • Recruiting and leading volunteers at meal sites
  • Collecting and analyzing data on emergency meal providers and guests
  • Researching social service providers and connecting them with meal providers
  • Facilitating meal guests’ connections to social services needed
  • Researching potential sources of funding, volunteers, and other resources
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Applicants must be an undergraduate or graduate student to be considered. Applicants should have a strong background in one of the following: social work, human services, community development, public administration, public policy, public health, urban planning, urban studies, statistics, political science, or nonprofit management. Also important are strong written and verbal communication skills, problem solving skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

The Office of Homeless Services will contact you upon assessment of your cover letter and resume if you are selected for an interview. Applications will be accepted through August 20th 2018. We are accepting applicants on a rolling basis, so interviews will take place as applications are received. We are looking for fellows who can begin in early September.

An initiative of United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey and the City of Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Food Access Collaborative is a central group designed to meet the needs of the emergency food network, disseminate information on meal availability and help individuals and providers navigate the vast landscape of emergency food assistance in Philadelphia to maximize effectiveness. This network of organizations includes emergency food providers, social services and behavioral health organizations, community members, city government, emergency meal guests and philanthropic organizations working to combat hunger.
