Help adult students overcome barriers to success! Volunteer as a Retention Specialist!
This Adult Secondary Education (ASE) Retention Specialist will help our students identify current or potential barriers that may impact their studies. This role works to help students problem solve and, when needed, connect to community resources.
Literacy Services’ (LSW) adult students in the Downtown ASE program build the necessary academic skills to help them accomplish goals such as obtaining a GED, meeting entrance requirements for pre-apprenticeship preparation programming for the construction skilled trades, gaining entrance to HSED programming, or preparing for the placement exam used by MATC. Through earning a secondary credential or building skills to meet these specific entrance requirements, students can gain greater access to the community of which they are a part - the community that we share.
The ASE Retention Specialist works to encourage the success of students enrolled in LSW’s ASE program through:
- Close communication with new/currently enrolled students through various means (face to face, phone, email, USPS);
- Identifying barriers or potential barriers to consistent attendance (appointments, transportation, childcare, etc.) with each student;
- Introducing problem solving strategy individually to students as needed;
- Sourcing community resources;
- Encouraging students to self-advocate; and,
- Encouraging students by reminding them of and reaffirming their goals.
You should consider this position if you:
- Are compassionate and friendly;
- Are a good communicator;
- Are able to "put yourself in someone else’s shoes";
- Enjoy encouraging people;
- Enjoy problem solving;
- Work well with people as well as work well independently; and,
- Preferably, have professional experience/credential in social work, counseling, or related field.
Time commitment: At least 3hrs/wk at our downtown location. Schedule negotiable.
