Disasters come in, both natural and man-made forms. Each year, The Salvation Army serves over one million Americans in dozens of disaster response efforts nationwide. And when disaster strikes, The Salvation Army is often among the first on the scene. Our trained personnel are always available to meet emergencies by providing food, shelter, clothing and spiritual comfort. In disaster relief operation, The Salvation Army's first aim is to meet the basic needs of those affected - both survivors and first responders.
The Salvation Army Maine Capital Region is seeking a volunteer Emergency Disaster Services ("EDS") director to assist with the "re-start" of the Emergency Disaster Services program in central Maine as well as manage the program on an ongoing basis. In partnership with the local Salvation Army corps officer, this position directs all local EDS operations.
Responsibilities include:
- Coordination & delivery of direct emergency services of The Salvation Army including mobile & fixed feeding, disaster social services, hydration station and distribution of donated goods. Services are delivered via mobile response EDS vehicle or at a fixed location.
- Networking with county Emergency Management Agency, local & county law enforcement agencies, fire departments and other emergency services providers
- Volunteer recruitment & management
- Maintenance of EDS response vehicle ("canteen")
- Attend trainings as available
Skills
- Relationship building and developing strong partnerships
- General understanding of fire ground operations & emergency services support
- Ability to recruit volunteers and arrange training with The Salvation Army Divisional Headquarters (note: The Salvation Army has a national curriculum and professional instructors)
- Excellent communications skills
- Willingness to learn
Other:
- Ideal volunteer position for a retired fire fighter who is looking for a leadership opportunity with the ability to provide assistance to primarily first responders
- Time commitment varies, but would generally be about 15 hours per month - volunteer to set their own schedule
- Familiarity with EMA and VOAD would be a plus
- In the event of a major disaster, the canteen and crew may be asked if they can respond for periods of up to two weeks. If desired, there are volunteer opportunities to respond to major disasters / emergencies worldwide (note that
Requirements:
- Valid driver’s license & driving history acceptable to The Salvation Army insurance carrier
- Successfully pass a background check
- Completion of The Salvation Army kidSafe vulnerable adult & child safety program
- As available, completion of Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services training programs
- Completion of basic first aid / CPR course
