The Every Student Succeeds Intern will work closely with the Deputy Director to research and develop a case study on the Every Student Succeeds Act, existing AmeriCorps program models addressing the priorities of ESSA and areas for potential. The volunteer/intern will work independently and report directly to the Deputy Director. S/he will participate in regular meetings (in-person or by phone); participate in an orientation; and communicate regularly with the Deputy Director and ASC team.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (negotiable depending on areas of interest/expertise):

  • Research the priorities of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) and where is crossover with national service programming and traditional volunteering with a focus on AmeriCorps State.
  • Identify existing program models addressing priorities of ESSA
  • Write a case study with the findings and areas for further program development to address ESSA priorities.
  • Support the sharing and dissemination of the final case study, as appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned related to afterschool program development

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Familiarity with educational programming
  • Familiarity with national service and AmeriCorps programs or willingness to learn about this

TIMEFRAME:
Length of commitment: 8-12 weeks depending on availability
Scheduling will be at the discretion of intern with input from Deputy Director
Specific days/times needed: Flexible based on other volunteer/intern’s availability

WORKSITE: This internship is to be completed using the volunteer’s own technology equipment and/or software, phone, and Internet connection. Deputy Director is available to meet the intern regularly via web meetings or in-person in Des Moines, IA.

Description

America’s Service Commissions (ASC) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization representing and promoting the 52 state service commissions across the United States and their programs, including AmeriCorps State and Volunteer Generation Fund programs.

State service commissions are governor-appointed public agencies or nonprofit organizations made up of more than 1,000 commissioners, private citizens leading the nation’s service movement and administering 80 percent of the federal AmeriCorps funds to address pressing community needs.
