Volunteer tutors/mentors are needed to work with at-risk youth ages 6-17 who have been referred by Juvenile Court Counselors, schools, community agencies, and parents in Wake County. The students and their tutors generally meet twice a week for 1.5 hours per session. Tutoring sessions are usually conducted between 3pm and 6pm Monday-Thursday, but times may vary. Sessions are held in libraries around the county. Currently, due to the pandemic, all sessions are being held virtually. We understand that our students and tutors all have a lot to juggle each day, so we do our best to remain flexible in scheduling and to find times that are most effective for all involved. In order to see the best results from our students, we ask for a 6-month commitment from both our students and our volunteers. If you have a concern about this commitment, please contact the program manager and we will do our best to work with your schedule.
Prior to beginning tutoring, you will be asked to complete a short online training course to introduce you to our training materials and share the basics of lesson planning for our student population. During your time volunteering with the JLC, you will be asked to create and execute lesson plans with your student. You will be given access to an online database of lesson plans and educational materials that can serve as tools for creating these plans. Each month, you will be asked to submit a detailed report of both the work you are doing and the student’s academic progress. Tutors are asked to keep records of attempted academic interventions and student attendance. Most tutors dedicate a maximum of 5 hours a week to this role.
