ORGANIZATION: JVS, Jewish Vocational Service

JVS provides a broad range of services including adult education, skills training, job readiness training, job placement and support, and access to post-secondary education. JVS assists employers in their search for well-qualified job applicants and their initiatives to upgrade the skills of their incumbent workforce.

Program/Department Overview:


JVS Bridges to College is a 6 month college preparation program that provides academic classes, individualized coaching and tutoring, financial literacy training, and help navigating the logistics of entering college. Our program allows students to bypass developmental courses and enter college taking credit-bearing classes, and also ensures that they have the skills to persevere in college and in a career. Bridges has three pathways: General Studies, Information Technology for Healthcare (HIT), and Biotechnology, all designed to get our graduates into jobs that pay a living wage and have growth potential. Bridges continues to work with program graduates throughout college and offers job search support after graduation.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach basic arithmetic - addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, decimals, fractions, and solving word problems.
  • Assist students with their homework assignments
  • Teach between 3 - 7 students (English is not their first language for many of the students)

Skills/Qualifications:

  • Patience
  • Comfortable working with adult learns from many different backgrounds.
  • Ideal, but not necessary if familiar with binary and hexadecimal numbering systems.

Each year, JVS empowers more than 21,000 individuals through more than 36 services that guide clients on a pathway to meaningful employment; some of which include educational testing, skills training, English for Speakers of Other Languages, job search training, career counseling, Adult Basic Literacy and Adult Diploma Program instruction, citizenship education and financial literacy.
