ABOUT YOUTHBUILD:

We currently seek Tutors to participate in the 2018-2019 school year’s program, which takes place Monday through Friday from 8:00am-3:00pm. If you have availability Monday through Friday, 8:00am-3:00pm and are interested in being a tutor, please consider applying.

YouthBuild DC Public Charter School (YBDCPCS) is an alternative high school for young people seeking to transform their lives by re-engaging in their education in a non-traditional school environment. YBPCS prepares students for post secondary education and the workplace by offering, in English and Spanish, academic, vocational and workforce development programs. YBPCS believes that service to the community is an essential part of the transformative process. Therefore, students serve their community through volunteer projects and by creating housing for low income residents in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

YouthBuild PCS gives young people the tools they need to transform their lives and communities through education, skill-building, and service. Students transform their lives by receiving: GED preparation; construction certification; internships; counseling; college preparation; computer technology training; and professional development.

TUTOR ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide support and homework help in :
    • Applied mathematics,
    • Mathematics computation,
    • Reading comprehension,
    • Social studies,
    • English & Language Arts,
    • Spanish,
    • Science and
    • Computer instruction
  • Support students preparing for the pre-GED and the GED
  • Build self-esteem and motivation
  • Help set academic goals and work toward accomplishing them

PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Be at least 18 years old

  • Be interested in working with young people

  • Be willing to complete the application and screening process

    • Complete application

    • Successfully complete and pass background check (FBI/MPD/SureHire/NSOPW)

    • Go through orientation/interview with volunteer supervisor

  • Be dependable and consistent in meeting the time commitments

  • Be willing to communicate regularly with program staff, submit hours information and take constructive feedback regarding tutoring activities

  • Not use alcohol or drugs while in service


TIME COMMITMENT:

  • You can make a short- or long-term commitment,
  • Make a commitment to at least 1 tutoring block per week
