About Jumpstart
Jumpstart is a national early education organization that recruits and trains college students and community volunteers to work with preschool children in low-income neighborhoods. Position OVERviewThe Community Engagement Coordinator (CEC) is a full-time AmeriCorps position serving 1,700 hours over an 11.5-month term of service and is also known as the Strengthening Communities Corps Member. This position maybe based out of Jumpstart’s California office in San Francisco and requires frequent travel to and from the communities Jumpstart serves. The CEC will help coordinate all Jumpstart volunteer recruitment and management efforts and oversee Jumpstart’s participation in community events. The CEC works closely with the Field Operations and Strategy department (FOS) and California Development team and engages a diverse group of volunteers, such as Jumpstart Corps members and alumni, community members, and corporate volunteers. The CEC is to be supervised by the Community Engagement & Operations Manager.
SPECIFIC ResponsibilitiesAmeriCorps Member Responsibilities
- Serve full-time for 1,700 hours (35-40 hours per week) over 11.5 months (September 2018 to Mid-August 2019)
- Participate in all required AmeriCorps National Service Days (i.e. 9/11 Day of Service, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, Cesar Chavez Day of Service and Learning, etc.)
- Recruit 400 short-term volunteers and 40 long-term volunteers over the year
- Track and report on all volunteer engagement data
- Participate in a mid-year and end of year performance review process with supervisor
- Complete bi-weekly timesheets to accurately report hours served
- Collaborate and communicate with another Community Engagement Coordinator and local site staff on an on-going basis
Volunteer Management: Recruitment & Management
- Serve as a Jumpstart leader and representative at all volunteer events and external partnership and planning meetings
- Partner with the FOS and Development teams to promote Jumpstart’s community engagement efforts and events internally and externally using social media, oral presentation, and other outreach tools
- Plan, schedule and supervise projects for volunteers
- Lead and provide an oral/written orientation document/guide for all new volunteers
- Explain, collect, and input all required volunteer paperwork; periodic review for accuracy
- Use online tool(s) to manage volunteer events and opportunities, capture volunteer contact information and service hours, and record volunteer interest and signups; utilize tool for tracking and reporting data
- Maintain an inventory of all Jumpstart materials as needed
Volunteer Management: Community & Corporate Engagement
- Steward and support the development of key volunteerism partnerships with nonprofits, corporations, and civic organizations in partnership with the Jumpstart team
- Partner with the Jumpstart team to organize and coordinate Jumpstart’s annual, high-visibility events such as Jumpstart’s Read for the Record and Jumpstart for a Day at the site level
- Develop and maintain a calendar of volunteer engagement opportunities and manage logistics pertaining to each event
- Create post-event summaries to capture tips, best practices, key contacts, etc. for future planning
- Manage the preparation, distribution, and inventory of home library books, if applicable
Volunteer Management: Recognition
- Help to create and finalize the plan for volunteer recognition
- Lead recognition of all volunteers during and after service event(s)
- Send out on-going communications and monthly newsletters to keep volunteers engaged
- Create celebration announcements with photos and post to Jumpstart’s internal intranet and external website
Support and Troubleshooting
- Serve as primary contact for volunteers, answering questions regarding Jumpstart’s volunteer opportunities, and managing challenges or conflict that may arise
- Regularly communicate with other Jumpstart markets and external agencies regarding volunteer management best practices
- Identify and share additional resources or innovative ideas with the team that can enhance Jumpstart’s volunteer management efforts
Other Responsibilities
- Participate in regularly scheduled meetings with Jumpstart team
- Work with the FOS and Development Teams to provide quantitative and qualitative information related to community engagement for grant reporting
- Support the management of the FOS, Development, and Community Corps interns in collaboration with manager
- Support other duties related to Community duties/opportunities as arise.
- Serve an average of 35-40 hours per week during the program year including:
- Volunteer management activities (detailed above), ongoing and daily basis
- Weekly supervisory meetings with Community Engagement and Operations Manager, 1-2 hours per week
- Planning meetings and check-ins with fellow Community Engagement Coordinator, 1-2 hours per week
- Preparing for volunteer service projects and community events, 10-20 hours per week
- Attending/leading volunteer service projects and community events, 4-12 hours per week
- Planning meetings and check-ins with local staff, 2-4 hours per month
- Participate in intensive trainings and regional gatherings and meetings as needed
- Dedication to Jumpstart and AmeriCorps’ missions
- Excellent project management skills with attention to detail, a focus on efficiency and strong relationship management skills
- Effective communication/presentation skills; both verbal and written
- Strong public speaking skills, including the ability to facilitate meetings and trainings
- Excellent interpersonal skills working with volunteers, members, donors, and staff
- Ability to lead a team of diverse volunteers to accomplish service projects
- Willingness to seek and use available resources to support problem solving efforts
- Availability, dependability, and willingness to be flexible
Additional Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree required
- Proficiency in Spanish strongly desired
- Valid CA Driver’s License
- Demonstrated ability to use basic and some advanced functions of Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, Publisher), internet and web-based forms
- Ability to lift bins weighing up to 20 lbs
- Ability to serve periodic evenings and weekends as needed
- Ability to travel locally when needed
- Total living allowance of up to $27,464 to be paid on a bi-weekly basis over the course of the service term
- Eligible to receive an AmeriCorps education award of $ 5,920 upon successful completion of 1,700 hour service term
- Full medical benefits coverage for duration of service term
