The David L. Hoyt Foundation and the Chicago Poetry Center have partnered up to create a public art mural in Douglas Park, North Lawndale.

This public art project will be painted on the sidewalk using 1500 letter stencils to create over 5000 letters. The letters form words spelled out in winding patterns, and the words become a poem. The installation will cover a footpath within the Park, where families can work together to find all the words!

We are looking for volunteers to help with the following opportunities:

  • Painting the Word Play Way on the sidewalk
  • Launch event set up and pack down, documentation and general upkeep
  • Participating in Word Play Way programming, promoting the project to classes and community groups in North Lawndale!

About David L. Hoyt Education Foundation

Location:

Mission Statement

The David L. Hoyt Education Foundation was formed to develop and promote play-based and collaborative learning. We recognize the need to encourage and foster education, community, and responsible citizenship. We create accessible experiences and related curricula that engage learners with fun and interactive games and puzzles. The foundation, and its team, values teamwork, fun, innovation, critical thinking, leadership, empathy, creativity, and literacy.

Description

The founders, David L. Hoyt and Claire Haasl, understand that play is endlessly important to creating global citizens who can make strategic decisions and think creatively. In order to fulfill our mission we strive to accomplish the following objectives: developing curricula for Giant Word Winder and Giant Math Winder; partnering with existing educational and community organizations; providing educational games and/or play-based tools; and providing fundraising tools for those looking to raise money for games.

We are excited that 2018 is bringing new initiatives, such as the Center for Collaborative Learning at 4054 N. Lincoln Ave in Chicago, IL, which moved from its old location and officially opened its doors in April of this year.
