In 2008 Merrimack Hall offered 1 weekly dance class to 10 children with special needs. Today, that one dance class has evolved into a comprehensive, year-round program called The Happy Headquarters. Our program has three distinct activities: Happy HeARTs, an after school arts education program; Happy Days, for individuals who have completed their formal education; and Happy Camp, summer program. Each activity gives people with special needs the chance to explore and express their creativitiy in non-competitive, arts experiences. We believe the arts should be accessible to everyone, regardless of any challenge they may face.
The Happy Headquarters programs rely on the help of more than 300 volunteers each year. Volunteers are admitted throughout the year. Happy HeARTs classes are held weekly during the school year, and volunteers are encouraged to sign up for one semester at a time, to ensure consistency for their student. To volunteer for any of the programs at
The Happy Headquarters, call (256) 534-6455 or e-mail jdicarlo@merrimackhall.com.
