Project Open Hand’s mission is to nourish and engage our community by providing "meals with love" to the sick and the elderly. Our Wellness Programs focus on serving people who are sick and need nutritious food to support their medical treatment.
Our clients receive a nutrition and wellness assessment from our Registered Dietitians when starting service. As part of our intervention to promote dietary wellness, our nutrition team hosts weekly food demo sessions highlighting staples from our shopping menu.
We are seeking a volunteer to support our weekly demos. Duties include:
- Set-up and breakdown of produce stand
- Prepare demo spotlight item
- Understand and observe safe food handling practices
- Engage clients by providing produce samples and recipes
- Help clients with shopping lists as needed
- Nutrition team to support as needed
Qualifications:
- Maintain client confidentiality as outlined in HIPAA regulations
- Able to work independently
- Interest in food and food preparation
- Comfortable working in a busy kitchen
- Commit to a regular weekly shift
Desired Skill Sets:
- Comfort/knowledge around critical illness
- Understand and observe HIPAA
- Comfortable interacting and conveying basic information on food and nutrition
Time Commitment:
At least 3 months; Tuesdays; 2-4 hours per shift

Mission Statement
Project Open Hand provides food and nourishment to improve the quality of life for the men, women and children it serves. Project Open Hand programs include: meal, grocery and nutrition counseling for people with symptomatic HIV and AIDS; congregate lunch and nutrition education for people over 60 years of age; meal service for homebound and critically ill people under the age of 60. Services are available to eligible clients living in San Francisco and Alameda counties.
Description
Founded in 1985, Project Open Hand is a nonprofit organization that provides meals with love to critically ill neighbors and seniors. Our food is like medicine, helping clients recover from illness, get stronger, and lead healthier lives.
Every day, we prepare 2,500 nutritious meals and provide 200 bags of healthy groceries to help sustain our clients as they battle serious illnesses, isolation, or the health challenges of aging. We serve San Francisco and Oakland, engaging more than 125 volunteers daily to nourish our community.
