Children of Inmates Inc. (COI) is currently seeking individuals interested in being change agents within Miami-Dade and Broward County. Children of Inmates has partnered with AmeriCorps to place individuals into intensive service positions where they learn valuable work skills, receive money for education, and develop an appreciation for citizenship. COI AmeriCorps members will dedicate a year of their lives toward direct community service to children of incarcerated parents. AmeriCorps members will be assisting COI’s staff to reconnect, strengthen and nurture bonds between children, their caregivers and incarcerated parents. Members will receive a taxable living allowance of $16,000. Upon successful completion, members will receive an educational award of $5,775 that may be applied to higher education or unpaid student loans. We look to fill spots immediately with individuals seeking to gain valuable experience with criminogenic families and to enhance professional, personal growth and development. Please, contact Shareefah Brand at Shareefahb@childrenofinmates.org for more information.

Mission Statement

It is the mission of Children of Inmates Incorporated to help foster a greater future for our youth. Our goal is to interrupt inter-generational incarceration. We assure that children with incarcerated parents have opportunities to be cared for and are supported in their development by responsible adults, helping professionals, and others in their communities.

Description

The Service Network for Children of Inmates is a coalition of ten organizations in Florida with a mission of assuring that children with an incarcerated parent will have opportunities to be cared for and supported in their development by responsible adults, helping professionals, and others in their communities. Such opportunities are essential at each developmental stage for these children to have safe passage to adulthood. In doing so, we expect to help interrupt generation-to-generation antisocial behaviors, delinquency and incarceration.

Since its inception in 2007, Since our program initiated, more than 4,500 children have been touched by the compassion, hard work and dedication of our staff and volunteers. Close to 2,500 children have received in-depth care coordination. And, in all, more than 6,000 children have attended our Family Bonding Visits to 20 different correctional institutions across Florida. The Network has received over 3,000 referrals from incarcerated parents and other sources, located and contact over 2,500 of those referrals and provided care coordination services to over 2,500. The Network has garnered the attention of the news media as evidenced by three articles in the Miami Herald, media coverage from channel 4 and channel 10, a National Public Radio showcase as well as being featured in the Time Magazine.
