LOSS (Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors) Community Services is seeking volunteers to receive training and join the team. We are looking to increase our First Responder program with reliable and passionate volunteers.
The First Responder team requires two roles for the program to be able to provide support for survivors of suicide loss immediately or soon after their loss through working with the coroner's office. The two roles needed for our First Responder program are:
- On-call Phone Dispatcher
- On-call First Responders (we respond in teams of two and teams always include a survivor of suicide loss.
The First Responder volunteer opportunity must reside in central Ohio.
The team is in need of volunteers to be available by telephone for a designated period to receive calls from the on-call dispatcher. The Volunteer LOSS First Responder joins 1-2 LOSS team members at a designated meeting area to be physically present at the scene of a suicide in order to provide emotional support and appropriate resources to the survivors of a suicide loss.
This role requires compassion, reliability, calm and soothing demeanor, communication skills, and self-care to serve a vital function in providing service to newly bereaved survivors of suicide loss.
This role also requires an understanding of the geography of Columbus and neighboring suburbs.

*You will need to live in the Franklin County Ohio area to be an eligible volunteer

Mission Statement
LOSS (Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors) Community Services exists to be an instillation of hope to those bereaved by suicide.
Description
LOSS (Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors) Community Services is a survivor-led peer support organization.
Trained volunteers - many of whom are survivors of a suicide loss - provide immediate assistance to the newly bereaved to help them cope with the trauma of their loss.
LOSS trained volunteers can also meet with survivors in the weeks and months to come. Suicide grief can be different from other types of losses. Often suicide survivors feel isolated - like no one understands their grief. Connecting with someone who has a similar lived experience can be encouraging and provide a sense of "normalcy" in a very difficult, uncomfortable journey.
LOSS provides follow-up contact with survivors by sending cards, free resource materials and providing connections to local services and support groups in the Franklin County community. There are many other opportunities to serve. Visit our website to register for an upcoming Information Session.
LOSS also hosts Remembrance Events and Support Groups
